From Way Up Here – Wednesday 17 July 2024

In January 2024 we started working with four primary schools across Gosport to devise and develop the Gosport Giant Sing – From Way Up Here; the first event of its kind in the area.
Rowner Junior School, Woodcot Primary School, St John’s CE Primary School and Grange Junior School have all completed and written their own song inspired by the heritage and stories of Gosport. Eight classes worked with Hazel Gould (lyricist) and Judith Beton (Composer) over a series of four workshops to explore the ideas through text and music.
Taking inspiration from a series of postcards issued by Hampshire Cultural Trust From Way Up Here follows the journey of the Brent Geese as they travel along the Alver River on their migration route, discovering the Gosport Diving Helmet, Elvis the Eel, the sailmakers and many more along the way.
Eight classes created the eight different songs which were shared with all the local primary schools. Two performances of the piece along with a live band and narration took place on Wednesday 17 July at Fort Brockhurst which schools were invited to attend. They were also able to join in the singing as all resources and songs were shared with them, to learn prior to the day and attendees sang along from the audience.
